Hellaby on the Web
Only of interest to Hellabies.
A web search on "Hellaby" (Google, late 1999) threw up 409 pages.
As usual, other search engines threw up a different set of sites.
Here's a summary of what I've found. (Odd bits of newer info
I've received are included.)
There is no attempt at completeness here, and no plan to keep the
info current.
- PEOPLE - SIGNIFICANT INFO
- Hilda Alice Hellaby lived in Vancouver and then Yukon.
First Anglican woman in Canada to earn a theology degree. Deaconess of
Anglican Church (one site says Catholic), 1951 - 1983. Church hall in
Whitehorse named after her. See
http://www.yukoncollege.yk.ca/~agraham/womensconf/nwnotable6.htm

Received a Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Persons
Case in 1982. See

- Australian freelance reporter David Hellaby writes mostly
on computer and infotech matters. Lots of his articles appear on
newspaper web pages. Doesn't seem to have his own web page. E-mail:
hellaby@bigpond.com, DavidH@megabyte.com.au. He used to be a top
investigative reporter (for News Ltd), and won a number of awards. He
investigated the collapse of the State Bank of South Australia, in which
he reported that billions had gone missing, and alleged bank fraud. One
time he decided to take a stand on the question of source confidentiality
for reporters, which Australian law limits. He refused to divulge a
source to a court, which resulted in a contempt of court fine. There were
also death threats, and an abduction attempt against the family. David's
investigative work is still studied in journalism courses. No-one (other
than David) was ever convicted in connection with the collapse.

under construction. (At present it's not a commercial site.)

- PEOPLE - MENTIONED IN FAMILY TREES
- PLACES & BUILDINGS
- BUSINESSES & FUNDS
- Miss E L Hellaby Indigenous Grasslands Research Trust.
Awards to individuals from this fund are cited in several CVs, and a few
research projects cite a research grant from it. See
http://www.lincoln.ac.nz/scholar/postmain.htm
- The New Zealand Hellabies made their name in the meat packing
business. These days Hellaby's Corned Beef seems to be a
staple in Austral-Asia, e.g:
http://www.samoa.co.uk/food&drink.html
I found mention of the following companies:
- Hellaby Holdings Limited. Found regularly in New Zealand
Stock Exchange listings, share price listings, brokerage listings, and
business news. The company doesn't seem to have their own webpage, but
see
http://www.globalregister.co.nz/company/hellaby.htm
- Hellaby and Proctor Meat. New Zealand. (This site
http://www.cyberspace.co.nz/cgi-bin/Mdns?hellaby.co.nz
has no actual web page for them yet.

- MISCELLANEOUS
- Guestbook signatures. Sometimes an electronic "guestbook"
is signed by a Hellaby. (You can sometimes get Hellaby e-mail addresses
from them.)
- These genealogy sites return (a little) useful information
on Hellaby:
http://www.ancestry.com
.
The World Tree hosted here sounds like a great idea, but
doesn't contain any Hellabies yet. You're invited to submit your family
tree, and the collected information is apparently free.
http://www.familytreemaker.com/cgi-bin/iff
.
The World Family Tree here also invites you to submit your
family tree, and then asks you to pay for the resulting CDs.
- The following site compares Scandinavian, English and Norman
names, including Hellaby:
http://viking.no/e/france/personal-place-names.htm
- Various genealogy sites list Hellaby but give no
information.
- If you do a web search on "genealogy" with your favourite
search engine, you'll find loads of databases you could examine. But it
would take a lot of time! I'd imagine the search engines must look at
them when you do a search on your surname - or perhaps they're too
voluminous.
- IRRELEVANT
- Royston Hellaby supposedly from Nottingham, England, used
to have a web page at
http://members.xoom.com/Hellaby/
which was basically a note asking for Hellaby genealogical information.
Several emails to him raised no reply. The page seems to have
disappeared. I don't think this is a real person.
- Hellaby Industrial Estate at Hellaby village. Quite a few
industries have web pages listing this as their address.
- Individual web pages with home or work addresses in Hellaby
village or Hellaby Industrial Estate.
